We try an elusive green tea cake made from marshmallows.
Starbucks Japan is known as the place to go for cute drinks and seasonal Frappuccinos, but lately the chain has also branched out with a few surprises on the cake menu.
▼ The last surprise in the chain is the Matcha and coffee cream pop, which is only available in certain locations.
We had never seen anything so cute in the cake section of Starbucks before, so as soon as we laid eyes on this unusual pop cake, we didn’t need to convince to buy one for 319 yen. (US $ 2.81). Its small and compact size, shown here alongside a Pasmo transport card for the scale, made it the perfect accompaniment to our afternoon coffee.
Lifting the whole piece to our taste buds, we felt an intoxicating sense of decadence, as if we were eating a big slice of cake with our hands. We didn’t have to worry about getting our fingers dirty, thanks to the stick firmly embedded inside.
Our first bite delivered a delicious crunch through the matcha chocolate envelope, which gave way to a light and chewy matcha cake interior, finished with layers of coffee creme. The texture of the cake was truly remarkable, as the matcha dough is baked with a marshmallow base (marshmallow) mixed with it, giving it a soft and spongy lightness.
The height of the cake gave each bite a full and satisfying mouth feel, while the individual components blended harmoniously to create a simply perfect coffee-matcha ratio. Despite its small size, it delivered sachets of flavor, making our afternoon coffee a memorable one.
the Matcha and coffee cream pop is only available for a limited time and in select locations, so if you find it in the storefront, be sure to try it out. And if you’re looking for more elusive Starbucks items, you can always hunt down the Joyful Medley Drinks, which are only available in two locations across Japan!
