Russia to send representative of presidential culture to Abes’ funeral – Tokyo

TOKYO (UrduPoint News/Sputnik – September 22, 2022) Russia will be represented by the Presidential Envoy for Cultural Cooperation at the state funeral of slain former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, as noted in a guest list released Thursday by the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Mikhail Shvydkoy, who will travel to Tokyo for the funeral on September 27, is the Russian President’s special representative for international cultural cooperation and holds the rank of roving ambassador.

About 6,000 officials are expected at the state ceremony, including heads of state such as Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and King Abdullah II of Jordan.

It is only the second time since 1945 that a state funeral has been held in the country for someone who was not a member of the imperial family, and the rare honor has sparked controversy there.

Japanese media reported that some opposition parties refused to attend, due to the way it was decided, while a man in his 60s allegedly set himself on fire during the an apparent protest against the state funeral.

Abe, Japan’s longest serving prime minister, was in power from 2006 to 2007 and 2012 to 2020. He was fatally injured by shots fired by a 41-year-old man while delivering a campaign speech for a colleague in the city of Nara on July 8. The politician was cremated and had a funeral at a Buddhist temple a few days later.
