New McDonald’s Japan Winter Menu Exclusives: Hot Pies and Special Chicken Nuggets

Canadian Maple Custard Pie is just the beginning of this limited-time celebration of flavors.

One of the best sellers at McDonald’s in Japan during the colder months is its hot pies. This winter, it’s not just apples on the menu, because the channel also gives us a taste of Canada and Belgium, with the Canadian maple cream pie and the Belgian chocolate tart.

▼ Belgian Pie (right) has been appearing for a limited time in winter since 2020, but this is the first time it’s been out with a Canadian companion.

We went to try the new desserts when they came out yesterday and also had a cheeky helping of their new limited edition chicken nuggets. So let’s go directly to the tasting, starting with the Canadian maple cream pie.

As the name suggests, it is a cream pie that contains Canadian maple syrup, which is enough information to immediately make our mouths water. Splitting it in half, however, we were able to truly appreciate the true beauty of the pie, with its generous layer of maple syrup glistening in the light.

The syrup to custard ratio was much higher than expected, but when we bit into it, it turned out to line up perfectly with the whole pie, which had a slight saltiness to the batter. The casing was beautifully crispy and the vanilla custard filling was deliciously more indulgent. However, we must say that it was a very sweet pie. While this might be too sweet for some, we can imagine it would send sweet tooths straight to sweet heaven.

▼ Then it’s time to try the Belgian Chocolate.

While the maple cream pie was super sweet, this one was super rich. Again the crispy pie crust was fantastic and the chunky chocolate filling here couldn’t be faulted. It was an incredibly delicious pie, and we can totally understand why it’s been making a comeback on the menu as a decadent winter treat year after year.

After polishing both pies, we grabbed our box of nuggs waiting patiently in the wings. These new Peppercorn Garlic Spicy Chicken McNuggets are said to be the first new nuggets released by the golden arches in Japan for three and a half years!

Opening our box of nuggets revealed that they were coated in a nicely seasoned batter. Popping one in our mouths, we were surprised to find that this crispy, deep-fried coating was so well seasoned with black pepper that it immediately woke up our taste buds, even without any dipping.

The taste of black pepper was clearly pronounced and quite delicious. Adding a dollop of the included garlic soy sauce mayonnaise only made each morsel even tastier, creating a smooth creaminess and hint of garlic in every bite.

▼ The garlic hit was just right, not to overpower the peppery profile.

Spicy Nuggets were actually a great way to end this wintery flavor feast, as the spices helped cleanse the palate of the creamy sweetness of the pies.

All of these winter dishes will be on the menu for a limited time until early February, with the pies priced at 150 yen (1.32 USD) each and the spicy chicken nuggets priced at 200 yen.

Hopefully the treats will help sweeten the deal for McDonald’s customers in Japan, who are currently dealing with the temporary loss of hash browns and medium and large fries.
