MEFCC 2022: Your Ultimate Guide to the Pop Culture Event


Are you ready to witness the roar of a pumped-up crowd, larger-than-life cosplay outfits, celebrities and artists poetic about their craft, and all the nerdest nerds banding together? You better be, because the 10th Middle East Film and Comic Con (MEFCC) is back and ready to welcome pop culture fans back.

This year, the highly anticipated three-day event makes its debut in Abu Dhabi, following several years in Dubai – with the last event taking place in 2020 due to the pandemic. Like previous events, it promises fans a stellar lineup of panels, fun events, food and more. If you need help, here’s a guide to some of the coolest things to see and do at MEFCC.

Where and when?

The MEFCC takes place in ADNEC Halls 8 and 9 in Abu Dhabi on March 4 (3-10 p.m.), March 5 (12-10 p.m.) and March 6 (12-9 p.m.). Ticket prices start from 115 Dh for a day pass.

Who can we see there?

Here’s your chance to rub shoulders with celebrities and film industry stalwarts or get an autograph to add to your collection at MEET THE STARS ZONE.

CHARLIE COX: This English actor is best known for playing masked vigilante Matt Murdock/Daredevil in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) media franchise, appearing in the Netflix shows “Daredevil” and “The Defenders.” Most recently, he starred in “Spider-Man: No Way Home” in 2021.

He will be there on March 5. Photography sessions cost 230 Dh, while autograph sessions cost 210 Dh.

JON BERNTHAL: The American star got his big TV break in the hit zombie show ‘The Walking Dead’ and then made his violent and violent Netflix debut in the Marvel show ‘The Punisher’. He also acted in films such as “The Wolf of Wall Street”, “Sicario” and “Baby Driver”.

He will be present on March 5 and 6. Photography sessions are Dh190 and autograph sessions are Dh170.

NATHALIE EMMANUEL: This actress rose to fame playing the beloved character Missandei in HBO’s fantasy series “Game of Thrones.” She has also starred in two “Maze Runner” films and several “Fast & Furious” films.

She will be present on March 4 and 5. Photography sessions are Dh150 and autograph sessions are Dh130.

MICHAEL ROOKER: The actor is best known for playing the hilarious blue character Yondu Udonta in ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’. He also had roles in video games such as “Call of Duty: Black Ops”.

He will be present on March 5 and 6. Photography sessions are Dh150 and autograph sessions are Dh130.

KEVIN CONROY: Get closer to the man who has voiced Batman in over 30 projects, including movies, TV shows and games, since 1992.

He will be present all three days. Photography sessions are Dh100 and autograph sessions are Dh80.

CHARLES MARTINET: Here’s another famous voice actor to catch. Martinet has worked with Nintendo since 1994 and has been the voice of in-game characters Mario, Luigi, Wario, Waluigi, Toadsworth, Metal Mario, Shadow Mario, Mini-Mario Toys, Baby Mario, Baby Luigi and Baby Wario.

He will be present all three days. Photography sessions are Dh100 and autograph sessions are Dh80.

BARRY KEOGHAN: This Irish actor’s last major outing was as Druig in the Marvel epic “Eternals.” He also makes an appearance in the new “Batman” movie as the Joker. In the past he has acted in ‘Dunkirk’ and ‘The Killing of a Sacred Deer’.

He will be present on March 5 and 6. Photography sessions cost 230 Dh, while autograph sessions cost 210 Dh.

MING-NA WEN: This Chinese-American actress is known for being the voice of Disney’s animated film “Mulan” and as the voice of Aki Ross in the animated film “Final Fantasy”. Wen also starred in TV shows “Agents of SHIELD”, “The Mandalorian”, and “The Book of Boba Fett” (2021-2022).

She will be present on March 5 and 6. Photography sessions are Dh150 and autograph sessions are Dh130.

SEAN SCHEMMEL: This American actor and screenwriter has featured in English adaptations of Japanese anime and is best known for portraying the teenage and older adult incarnations of Goku in the Dragon Ball franchise, among other roles.

He will be present all three days. Photography sessions are Dh100 and autograph sessions are Dh80.

The MEFCC Theater

The MEFCC Theater is the perfect place to catch exclusive screenings and attend Q&A sessions and celebrity panels. These are panels that you can attend every day.

Besides attending talks and queuing for photos, there’s plenty more to do at the MEFCC. Get in on the off-screen action at The Mainstage, where cosplay contests, DJ performances, dance contests and other activations will take place.

This year’s cosplay contest (March 5, 6pm) is home to the cleverest and craziest outfits that can compete for the biggest prize pool in MEFCC history – Dh25,000. The three categories are Best Craftsmanship, Best Performance on Stage, and Best Kids Cosplay.

For gamers, there’s a Dh30,000 prize pool up for grabs in a tournament where participants play ‘Rocket League’, ‘Counter-Strike: Global Offensive’ and ‘Tekken 7’.

Performers include Emirati comedian Ali Al Sayed (March 6) and Emirati singer Alira (March 6).

There’s also a showcase from video game company Bandai Namco called “Journey Through The Realm Of Lands Between Elden Ring” (March 6).

After three days of festivities, attend the “after party” and dance with UAE-based band The Boxtones, performing at 8 p.m. on March 6.

Workshops

There are many free workshops you can attend on a first-come, first-served basis, covering a plethora of topics such as modern Zen art, costume making, illustration and animation, watercolor for comics and more. They will be held daily in ADNEC halls 8 and 9.

There is also a Gaming Zone, powered by GamesCon, which will allow attendees to participate in tournaments and test out software and innovations.

Other Attractions

Treat yourself to some geeky retail therapy at Artist Alley, where visitors can choose from quirky arts and crafts and other merchandise.

Never go hungry at MEFCC as there are food trucks such as Wokboyz, La Patrona, Wingstop and High Joint to choose from on the outdoor main stage.

The outdoor area also includes a skate park and a children’s area.

How to get there from Dubai

Organizers offer free shuttles for Dubai-based visitors from Ibn Battuta to ADNEC. MEFCC ticket holders can register for the shuttle on the website.
