Krispy Kreme adds donut burgers to its menu in Japan

The original glazed donuts get American toppings in some places.

In 2006, Japan’s first Krispy Kreme store opened on Shinjuku Southern Terrace in Yoyogi, Tokyo, with queues of people waiting for hours to sample the chain’s famous glazed donuts.

Eleven years later, that first store closed and the chain began to shrink, limiting its locations to major cities like Tokyo. It’s been difficult for Krispy Kreme to continue to please customers in Japan, especially with local chain Mister Donut dominating the market, but if their latest menu offering is anything to go by, they haven’t given up the fight. .

Our reporter, Mr. Sato, came across the new menu offering while walking past the food service branch of Krispy Kreme at Shibuya Cinema Tower. It was an exciting discovery that immediately made his taste buds form question marks in his mouth, so he headed inside to try it out.

▼ This is called the “donut burger“, and it is available from 11:00 a.m.

Mr. Sato had heard of donut burgers before, but these…these were in a league of their own. Each contained a very American flavor, sandwiched in a glazed donut.

That’s right – this Krispy Kreme had a Sloppy Joe donut and a Mac ‘n Cheese donut on the menu. According to staff, this fantastic duo was first showcased at the August 27 opening of Japan’s largest flagship store, the Tokyo International Forum Store, and has been on sale at the Shibuya site since August 14. september.

▼ Priced at 638 yen (US$4.35) each for dine-in customers, the donuts can also be purchased together as a “double combo” with a drink for 1,573 yen.

Sitting down with his double combo, Mr. Sato decided to start with the Sloppy Joewhich had cheese and meat sauce squirting out from between the original glazed halves of the donut.

Lifting the top half of the donut revealed a very meaty filling, with lots of tomato sauce and a slice of cheese. How well would this savory filling go with a sweet donut? Well, there was only one way to find out.

Biting into the donut revealed he was very sweet. In fact, the sweetness was the first note to hit the taste buds and it permeated the palate from the start. However, the sweetness was soon taken over by the flavorful meat, and the acidity of the pierced tomato sauce sweetness with satisfactory aplomb.

It was definitely a new taste sensation, and one Mr. Sato was keen to pursue with the Mac ‘N Cheese version.

This one flew the American flag from the start, with a bright yellow macaroni and cheese filling sitting on a slice of fried bacon.

It looked fantastic and tasted even better, with the salty bacon complementing the richness of the mac and cheese. This salty, creamy and gourmet filling perfectly resisted the sweetness of the beignet, creating a perfect harmony that was as surprising as it was delicious.

These two donut burgers stimulated Mr. Sato’s taste buds in a way they haven’t been stimulated since. he tried the Tempura Udon Dog. They’re weird but wonderful, and while you might feel guilty after eating two of them, they’re still far less guilty than the double donut burgers that appeared at Mister Donut earlier this year.
