I tried adding a grilled cheese beef patty at Five Guys after seeing the article on TikTok.
The item ended up costing the same as a single patty cheeseburger, but it didn’t taste the same.
With more cheese and an upside-down toast, this definitely stands out from a regular burger.
Five Guys Burgers and Fries has a relatively simple menu compared to its fast food competitors. But there are not-so-secret menu item lists made by customers for anyone who wants to get away from a traditional hamburger or hot dog.
Secret menus include tips for ordering cheese fries, loaded hot dogs, and galette fondant, which is grilled cheese with a burger patty inside.
In a previous interview with InsiderMaezion Henix, then an employee, said he was always confused when a customer walked in and asked for the off-menu item. He asked, “Why don’t you just have a cheeseburger? “
I admit that I was also skeptical at first. So after seeing several videos of melting pancakes on TikTok, I decided to try it for myself.
When I got to my local New York location, I walked over to place my order and asked for the fondue patty of that name. The team member working at the checkout wasn’t sure what I meant, so I clarified by asking for a grilled cheese with a patty inside. I could tell by his slightly puzzled look that they don’t get this off-menu command very often.
She called me for both items – $ 5.39 for the grilled cheese and $ 3 for the extra patty – and it all came back to $ 8.39. The “small” single-patty cheeseburger from the same Five Guys costs $ 8.49. At just 10 cents a difference, I would hardly say that melting the patties is the cheapest option.
But after taking my first bite, I realized it didn’t matter that it was basically the same price – it’s quite a different dining experience.
For starters, I really liked the texture of the toast as opposed to the softer bread that I’m used to biting into. It’s the exact same bun, but for grilled cheese, they flip it over and the charred sides end up being the first impression on your taste buds.
I have found that the only downside to this brioche technique is that the sandwich ends up being a bit fatter than normal. I didn’t mind, but you should expect your hands to be fatter when you’re done with the melted patty than with the burger.
This order contains two slices of cheese instead of the one standard slice per patty that I usually see on the line. There is cheese on both sides of the beef patty, making it a gooey mess of delight from the first bite.
After testing it for myself, I can see why so many people order it instead of a cheeseburger. You can add as many toppings as you would on the regular sandwich, and it will certainly satisfy a different type of munchies than the namesake sandwich.
So if you enjoy grilled cheese and love the Five Guys Burger, it’s worth trying the Fondant Patty the next time you find yourself dining out.
