The company, which was established in 1997, is no ordinary gastronomic site. On the one hand, it has been listed on the Japanese stock exchange since 2009 and has over 1.5 million impressive revenues created by its base of over 20 million users.
The new site has been translated into English and initially offers only 1,500 recipes. This is only a small portion of its total, although the figure is expected to increase to 30,000 in “the future to come,” Cookpad says.
The range of culinary ideas includes recipes for meat, fish, eggs, noodles, bento and more. You can find the top 15 categories listed on the left side of the site. Start reading and you’ll be whisked away to a rabbit hole of delicious Japanese food that is sure to make your mouth water and set you up for your next meal.
Katsu is one of my favorite Japanese dishes. A search presents a whole series of Katsu recipes lovingly added (and translated) to the English version of the site.
This recipe for the cheesy pork katsu (cheese is a more than worthy addition, believe me) includes step-by-step cooking instructions and photos. The lady who downloaded it is not a fan of cheese (surprisingly!) But her husband is (a man of good taste!)
Cookpad makes money in Japan with a premium membership, which offers additional features, while the free version of the site is ad-supported.
This business model is works well for Cookpad. The company increased its annual revenue by 28%, from 3.91 billion yen ($ 40 million) to 4.98 billion yen (about $ 50 million). Net income increased 46%, from $ 1.11 billion ($ 11 million) to $ 1.62 billion ($ 16.5 million).
