BRIN builds research facility for traditional food processing

Jakarta (ANTARA) – The National Agency for Research and Innovation (BRIN) has built a research facility for traditional food processing which is integrated with current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP).

The facility is known as the Traditional Foods GMP Facility (TFGF), the construction of which is complete and the stage of maintenance and fitting out of laboratory equipment is underway, the acting director said on Wednesday. of BRIN Engineering Science Research, Agus Haryono.

The State Sharia Securities (SBSN) program for 2020-2021 was used for the construction of the facility. The new research lab is considered important in the development and research of halal packaging.

Meanwhile, Acting Head of BRIN’s Natural Materials Technology Research Center (BPTBA), Satriyo Krido Wahono, explained that BPTBA’s flagship program encompasses food processing and packaging technology.

Wahono also noted that several parties, including Vice President Ma’ruf Amin, support the research conducted at BPTBA. According to Wahono, the vice president encouraged BRIN to realize the halal research center and factory sharing which become a sign of halal certification issued for food products of small and medium enterprises.

TFGF’s facilities include a coworking space building, an integrated laboratory, an in vivo examination building, and the cGMP building.

According to BPTBA’s laboratory manager, Safitri Widodo, a biomolecular laboratory, a food microbiology laboratory and a food mycology laboratory will also support halal research.

Besides, the cGMP building is equipped with several processing lines, such as packaging, coffee/cocoa, noodles, meat, beverages and a sensory lab, Widodo pointed out.

The integrated laboratory will work for research on packaging materials, food stability, food safety, food chemistry, food physics and food engineering. Meanwhile, research on animals, such as house mice, chickens, and cows, can be conducted in the in vivo examination building.
