Malaysia has a food waste problem as its citizens are used to throwing food away without thinking twice.

Just last year, New Strait Times reported that Malaysians threw away 4,081 tonnes of edible food.

The Solid Waste and Public Cleansing Management Corporation (SWCorp) found that 24% of food waste from last year, such as vegetable and meat scraps, could still be eaten.

Penang Consumers Association (CAP) education officer NV Subbarow said the amount of food thrown away could potentially feed 12 million people three times a day.

He suggested Malaysians try to make new meals from leftover food to reduce food waste and loss in the country.

Here are some recipes to try if you have leftover food or food that will go bad soon. As always, these recipes are only guides and you can adapt them according to your tastes.

1. Chicken murtabak with instant noodles

Food needed: Maggi (or equivalent), chicken, eggs, carrot, mozzarella cheese

Nothing screams “comfort food” other than Maggi Goreng. This recipe is great if you have instant noodles, eggs, and vegetables that you need to use up quickly.

2. Malaysian Kebab

Food needed: pita bread, ground meat, carrots, onions, leafy greens like cabbage or lettuce

The Malaysian kebab is not served on a skewer; it looks more like dorayaki bread made with pita bread. Other ingredients you will need are oyster sauce, mayonnaise, chili sauce, tomato sauce, and black pepper.

3. Refreshing Salad

The food needed: Japanese cucumber, corn, cherry tomatoes with honey, yellow onion, feta cheese, olive oil, honey, black pepper, coriander, dill, black olives

Salads can look boring and taste the same. However, this homemade recipe will make you see salads in a different way and it is so easy to prepare. All you have to do is cook the sweet corn.

To make the salad, all you have to do is combine the rest of the ingredients in a bowl. If you want to “spice it up” a bit, you can use an alcoholic vinaigrette.

4. Beef and cheese toastie with fries

Food needed: white bread, cheese, roast beef, fries/sweet potato fries

This Recipe is a great way to quickly finish off leftover white bread and fries. The result is a delicious, sinful meal that you might even want to make from scratch the next day. It is ideal for brunch, dinner or a late night snack. We don’t judge.

5. Spiced French Toast

Necessary food: bread or buns, eggs, milk, vanilla ice cream, maple syrup or honey

To make the spiced French toast, you’ll need cinnamon, but you can also opt for a regular “non-spicy” version. This Recipe is ideal if you need to quickly finish leftover milk, rolls or the last drops of your maple syrup or honey.

6. Banana and honey muffins

Necessary food: bananas, eggs, milk

Like an avocado, bananas ripen too slowly or too quickly. If the banana diet at home ripens quickly, you can either mix everything with milk and vanilla ice cream to make a banana milkshake, or you can make delicious muffins.

This recipe will require baking powder, self-rising flour and an oven.
